Srinagar: In a major breakthrough, a joint team of Jammu and Kashmir police on Tuesday shot dead two Lashkar-e-Taiba militants, including a foreign national, in an encounter at Nathipora in Sopore in Baramulla district of north Kashmir.
The slain foreign terrorist – also known as Hamas alias Asrar alias Saria – was involved in the killing of two councilors and a policeman in Sopore on March 29 this year, a senior police official said.
Kashmir Range Inspector General of Police (IGP) Vijay Kumar said a joint cordon and search operation was launched on a specific input given by Kupwara police regarding the presence of terrorists in Nathipora. When the search team stopped at the suspicious location, the hiding army militants opened fire on the security forces before starting the encounter, meanwhile the former was offered a chance to surrender but they did not do so.
Eventually both were killed and security forces recovered weapons and ammunition, including AK-rifles and Insas rifles, from the scene of the encounter. Further search is on.
Based on the similarities with the photograph, the local militant killed may have been Wasim Ahmed Lone of Hatlangu in Sopore, police said. Her family members are being called for identification of the body.
Meanwhile, as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order in the Sopore police district, officials have suspended internet services in the area.
